Why Is Preventative Dental Care So Important?

For most people who are taking care of children, home, work, daily life stresses, grocery shopping, family time, etc., making sure you keep up with your preventative dental checkup every 6 month is not the most important thing on your mind. Some people only see the dentist when they are in pain and that usually means expensive restorations or extractions. They find themselves in pain because they have not taken care of their teeth and seen a dentist on a regular basis.

Preventative services include x-ray, exam, cleaning and for the little ones also sealants and fluoride. The preventative services are exactly that… Preventative. It is meant to keep the teeth healthy so you can avoid having to deal with the possible pain and time and money for restorative dental work. If you have ever had a tooth extracted or a root canal, I imagine it is not something you want to experience ever again? Seeing the dentist every 6 months, along with eating and drinking healthy foods and regular brushing and flossing will help to eliminate major procedures such as these.

For parents, we also find there is this idea of “my child has baby teeth and they will fall out anyways so dental care is not important until they have their permanent teeth”. This is not the case. Regular dental visits for children from the time they have their first tooth is important. If the baby teeth have cavities, it can cause issues when the permanent teeth grow in. There could also be an abscess (infection) which causes bad breath, pain and in some very severe cases even death.

If you have not seen a dentist in 6 months or more, please call us today to schedule your appointment. We see all ages and in most cases, can schedule a time that your whole family can be seen for preventative appointments on the same day making it more convenient. We also have Saturday appointments available.
