Phoenix East – Encanto District

Magic Smiles East Phoenix office is located in the Encanto District of Phoenix on Thomas Road between the Phoenix Children’s Hospital and North High School. Encanto is one of the 15 Urban Villages that make up the city of Phoenix. The community is located in Central Phoenix and comprises 8 square miles, although the smallest of the 15 districts, Encanto is one of most densely populated. Encanto stretches from Black Canyon Freeway on the western border to Piestewa Freeway (named after the first female Native American Soldier killed in the Iraq war in 2003 – Lori Ann Piestewa) on the East, McDowell Road to the South and the Grand Canal to the North.

Encanto district’s history stretches all the way back to 1888, when James Dorris came to Phoenix with an interest in a small sweet’s shop. His business and fortune prospered and James opened a large 2 floor grocery store on First and Washington streets, said to the largest grocery in the area. Dorris purchased 320 acres of the land that in now the Encanto district in 1907, and constructed his family home, known as Encanto Manor. This began the development of a very prestigious area with one of the most sought after addresses in Phoenix at the time.
Now the area is home to the Phoenix Midtown and Uptown areas and contains local attractions like Park Central Mall; the Arizona State Fairgrounds; Arizona Veteran’s Memorial, the original home of the Phoenix Suns basketball team, Phoenix College and a number of parks.

Encanto Park is just one of the parks located in the district, just south of Thomas on 15th Ave. Construction of the park started in 1934 on land purchased from J.W. Dorris during the middle of the Great Depression in the United States. New Deal money was used to develop the park with a Clubhouse and 18-hole golf Course. In the early years paddle boat rides, canoeing and fishing were favorite past times of the locals at the park. Other amenities like the band shell, archery range and the many shade trees made Encanto park the recreational heart of the district.

Today the inner city golf course is still very active and enjoyed by both locals and tourists who visit Phoenix every winter, affectionately known to the locals as “snow birds”.
The Encanto area of Phoenix with a mix of ethnic backgrounds and peoples, single family homes to estates, small shops to high rise office buildings and green areas intermixed in between is a vibrant showcase of the wonderful diversity that makes Encanto home to many and an area of the city continues to grow and prosper.

The influence of Encanto Hispanic population can be seen throughout the area with business signs in English and Spanish lining the boulevards promoting everything from butchers to bakers and probably candlestick makers. The building painted with large murals are one of the highlights of the Encanto Area and are commonly featured in local and even nation publications. The vibrant colors and messages from hope to history dot the neighborhood.

Magic Smiles Dental Care is a proud member of the Encanto District and active within the community. Our community outreach programs assist the area Head Start and Day Care programs with early dental screening and oral health education, provide local High School with custom fitted mouth guards for the football team, and our annual stuffed animal donations to the family shelters during the Holidays are just a few of the ways Magic Smiles gives back to our Encanto community.
